There are very worrying trends at the Western Australian State Government Planning Department that should seriously concern us in Fremantle. Planning Minister John Day has overruled the City of Subiaco council decision not to allow a 16 storey tower on the former Subiaco Markets site on the corner of Rokeby Road. The Minister has ordered the council to implement a Planning Scheme Amendment that will get rid of the present maximum height of six storeys in Subi and allow for the highrise development in the centre of the city to go ahead.
We in Freo should now be extremely worried that John Day could allow high rise on Victoria Quay or even in our historic West End. If our city started to look like West Perth or Joondalup that could well be the end for Freo as a tourist destination.
