@TheNationalsWA have stuck their neck out in support of the community of Newman by refusing to sign off on BHP’s lease extension for a 1,600 bed FIFO camp.
This decision by The Nationals WA has not gone unnoticed by the Perth metropolitan councils of the western suburbs. They voted unanimously to offer support to the Shire of East Pilbara in a motion put to the Central Metropolitan Zone by Mayor Heather Henderson of Subiaco Council.
The motion read:
That the Central Metropolitan Zone and WALGA State Council offer its support to the Shire of East Pilbara by requesting the Premier of Western Australian; Minister for State Development the Hon. Colin Barnett to review the decision on the extension of the lease for BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Kurra Accommodation Village in Newman.

What also hasn’t gone unnoticed or unappreciated is the Nationals’ principled support of local governments against forced amalgamations, including the City of Perth Bill and the Subiaco 3000 – when both the so-called major parties colluded to disenfranchise them.
